Fenwick Quad

A century-old quad returned to daily use, in every season

Ann Arbor MI

Institutional

The original quad predated modern stormwater codes by half a century, and its aging drainage had left the lawn unusable for months at a time. Our design regraded the site to shed water intentionally, replaced compacted turf with a soil profile built for heavy foot traffic, and reintroduced a canopy of native shade trees selected to mature in step with the surrounding academic buildings. Students now cross the quad, sit on it, and hold class outside on it through fall and spring alike. The space performs as hard as it looks considered.
